Good deals gone bad!

I just received a Koch and Schafer "Super Kama" today that I won on ebay for a good price. I was so excited to get it so I could get it cleaned up and honed to shave with it. And this is what I saw when I opened the mail box...:( Needless to say I'm gonna try and get my money back. As a precaution when bidding on razors on ebay request that shipping be done in a box and not an envelope. Or at least a bubble pack envelope! :gaah: This thread is to open it up for all those horror stories of good deals on a nice razor gone bad, lets hear 'em, with pics if possible!

that's really sad!

I don't know if I'm more upset that you got screwed like that, or that such a nice razor got killed so bad.

I've gotten some razors with some really boneheaded packaging, and so far been really lucky that nothing major happened. I do wonder with that kind of damage if it would have been broken even with decent packaging, as it must have been abused pretty badly.

You should get your money back (and some extra for emotional distress).

It was sent US Priority Mail so I guess you could say he went postal on it!:rofl2:

Well in the auction pics it looked great and in one piece. I think because he sent it in an envelope it was put through the mail processing machines and got jammed. The ziploc bag that it was in looks ripped and kind of melted like a wheel was spinning on it as it was jammed. Just a theory. :shrug:

I received a razor packed the same way about 2 years ago . Foutunetly I only paid $9.99 for it , and only the scales were broken . The blade was okay so it wasn't a total loss . After that happened I've always been happy to pay a little more for secure packing , and priorty mail shipping . It seems some people either don't care , or don't have a clue as to how to pack fragile items for shipping .

I think part of the problem with poorly packaged ebay razors is that the people selling them simply don't understand them.

Someone who has never used a straight razor, and never done any reading on them, who is just re-selling stuff on ebay probably looks at a straight razor and sees a very sharp pocket knife that was used as a clumsy way to scrape hair off your face before we learned to make a proper mach 3. :rofl2:

It's a shame to see what looks like it had a lot of potential get trashed like this. I hope you're able to get a full refund for the razor and shipping costs.

Inexcusable. A regular envelope, one piece of cardboard and a baggy? Pure negligence and total disregard for the product and for the safety of the mail handlers.
I'm guessing the rubber bands were put there by the post office.
Such a waste. Really sorry. It was doomed from the moment it was placed in the mail.

I recently had a pretty decent shopping experience with an eBay shop, where one of my soap bowls came busted. No questions asked, the US-based seller put a new one in a proper box with loads of protective stuff and posted it to me, here in Europe. The shipping costs were definitely higher than what I paid for (I think with the original shipment as well), so this was good service.

In general buying from the bay is OK, as long as you use your brains too. Someone who's done lots with razors will know better what to do than someone emptying their attic. :)

Sad to see this type of stuff happening though, because you don't want a nice razor go to waste like this.

Thats terrible. I usually mail razors in a bubble wrap envelope with the razor wrapped in something. I have yet to have one destroyed. I guess I will start buying boxes to put them in because I would definitely be sick if this happened to me. Sorry about the razor, but thanks for sharing that way people can learn something about shipping a razor.

I think the vast majority of eBay traders ship their stuff decently packaged, but there are always a few clowns that stand out negatively, and unfortunately it's happened with a really nice razor here.

Looking at that packaging, I'm amazed at some of the stuff I found. I ordered some basic computer electronics from a guy in Hong Kong, at a price of $3 and a few cents, including shipping worldwide. The item came in a little box in a bubblewrapped envelope. Totally amazing, because that kind of shipping usually is more expensive than the total package price. Guess we live in a price-inflated part of the world. :D The component itself would've cost me around $20 in our local stores. ;)

That is simply awful, I would have cried if I paid for a razor and it came like that. I would be even more angry though if I paid the standard ebay shipping rate of 200% of the actual shipping cost and that's all the person stuck it in.

That's such a shame!

If I didn't know better I'd think the post office is trying to eliminate straight razor shipping!

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen yesterday. Got a bone handled razor off Ebay to use for the scales but the blade was OK as well. The bone scales were incredible looking in the photo and it arrived quickly and apparently well packaged. When I opened it and got to the razor though the bone on one scale had been completely crushed - much like the photo above. The seller was a stand-up guy and refunded most of it. the only reason he didn't give me a full refund was that I wanted to keep the metal. it's a Sheffield steel blade so I figured $2 for a blade is a good price for a project blade!

Really?? Using an option that includes a decent box but still just use an envelope that easily shreds. Not that it's forgivable on the USPS side, but my confidence in mail distribution companies/institutions is very low anyway. But if you can send it in a nice box without additional cost.... why not use it?

Here is my thought... What’s the point in bidding on an item, and winning at a bargain price, only to have it destroyed by poor packaging in postage?... then get back the money?
Insurance will replace the COST… but never the VALUE… What I want is the item, not the money.

Needless to say that seller received appropriate feedback.

If this was paid for through Paypal I would suggest making an "item not as described" claim. The purchase price and shipping should be refunded although you may have to pay for return shipping. As an occasional eBay purchaser I always make my purchases through Pp funded by a credit card. This way you can reverse the charge through your credit card if you do not receive satisfaction through Pp. The seller is required to deliver your purchase in good/as described condition regardless of whether it is insured or not. Even if it is stated in the auction description the seller is not responsible for items not insured, they are mistaken and Paypal will take your side.

If an item is appropriately packaged, but arrives damaged, I wouldn't consider it the sender's fault, but would work through the shipping company. Unfortunately they'll back themselves behind tons of disclaimers and what not if your package wasn't insured.

Insurance is good for sensitive items. A razor in a half-decent packaging isn't, in my opinion, and it ought to withstand the average mailman abuse. Flimsy packaging and then claiming it's the **buyer's** problem, weak.

These boxes are what I use, they hold up to 4 razors and still have room for bubble wrap or newspaper and the real kicker is that they cost less shipped to my door from ULINE then walking across the street to buy 6x9 bubble mailers from Staples..... Go Figure :rolleyes:

Correction, I made a mistake. It was sent US Postage Paid. Probably dropped in with the paper mail. Can you even consider that as shipping? I consider that mailed.:gth

This is exactly how I feel. I got this razor for $12.50 (+ $5 SHIPPING not mailing). Which to me was a score. I really wanted this razor, I don't really care about getting money. I am trying to get refunded but out of principal not for the money. I have been communicating with the seller and it's started off a little rough. I'll keep you guys posted once he takes a look at the pics.

I had one sent from Canada. The envelope was ripped open and the razor gone. Got my money back, but dammit, I wanted the razor!

my razor was shipped on this box!
its smaller than usps small box and its really though box!

This is really a shame.

Unfortunately when you pack in an envelope, it goes through a machine at the post office and more often than not, it gets torn up.

Packing in a box with bubble wrap around the razor and the box filled with packing peanuts or newspaper goes a long way. Even a 6x9 padded type envelope with the razor packed in bubble wrap stands a better chance.

What I like is in the auction, the postage is listed with insurance at a high amount. When I recieve the package, it is postmarked at 1/4 the price without insurance.

How do you like that ??

Recently, I won an auction with almost $10 in shipping cost posted in the auction. Yeah, even insurance was listed in the auction. So, I paid the shipping cost only to recieve the package with $1.59 postmarked on it ... shipped without insurance, of course. Freakin' deadbeats.


Now, I have been lucky so far and havent experienced anything like the other members posting their woes .... but I would absolutely contest the buy through paypal if a package arrived in such a condition.

Also, I do contact the seller sometimes and request certain packaging ... if I think they dont know what the heck they are doing. The seller usually gets bent about it, but if I dont recieve the item in the condition stated on the auction, I'm contesting ... and I let the seller know it right up front. Even if it's a $10 auction... lol.

IMO, the seller posts the auction with insurance on the shipping .. hey, I expect insurance. Call me crazy.

Although I've yet to buy a razor from E-bay, I have bought other things. The best "weapon" I've had so far when it comes to damages during shipping is PayPal. They really do stand behind the purchaser, NOT the seller. Those pics are painful to look at, as the seller was either too stupid to pack it correctly, or just didn't give a $h!t. Sorry this had to happen as it looked like a nice razor.

USPS Insurance is a big scam. You have to sue them in a Federal Court in order to get them to pay. Even then it is very questionable. At least Fedex and UPS pay their insurance claims.

The stupid shipper should get a bill from the USPS for repair of their zip code reading machine for envelopes.
